Want to go on a long walk with me? Cool, grab your New Balance. I'll wait by the door. Bring water. Maybe a towel.
All matter has consciousness. This consciousness is the vibration of the energy, possibly the strings of string theory. It doesn't matter how the quantum physicists model it; we know that matter is energy and energy is matter. We are literally condensed energy. And we know that matter is always in motion. It is always vibrating. It is always singing a song at different frequencies (output) depending on the material composition (algorithm) and temperature (input).
Perspective scale changes everything, even the laws of the material world beyond a certain threshold, I love imagining zooming out from our tiny little blue rock to the solar system, star clusters, galaxy, and galactic groups, clusters, and superclusters. In the other direction, we scale down to the molecule, atom, and into the various particles. But if we drilled down further, what would we see?
I had a vision once where I experienced, not directly, but obliquely, from a vast distance, what this level was. It was in many ways like standard graph paper! Upon the lines, dancing from one intersection to another, was squiggly lines of energy. And between the lines of squiggly energy was mostly empty space. This also correlates to what we know about matter; that most of an atom is empty space, and that most of the distance between atoms is also empty space.
Thinking of it this way, each and every one of us are really nothing but the most beautiful musical composition of an impossibly large number of squiggly lines spread vastly far apart from one another, yet coordinating somehow.
I don't care what you call It. God. The Great Spirit. Whatever. There is some Great Intelligence, some Supreme Glue that designed this and grew this complexity.
Back to graph paper. There were squiggly lines on graph paper and they were all very far apart from each other.

The difference was, though, that as one approached closer, each small square became itself one of the larger squares. It kept disappearing into smaller and smaller dimensions (or perhaps the dimensions took another shape, such as wrapping around in either time or space or both or something else entirely). The point was that there was no elemental end.
We can generally categorize types of matter into echelons, even though I take some exception to groupings in general. (Tangent: all "things" are just like groupings of scatter dot plots, whether we are talking about cells that form organs or organs that form individuals or individuals that form species, and so on. And this also informs part of my criticism regarding normalcy and the disproportionate power of the center population density of behavioral norms in society; more on that some other time.)

Consciousness is really just the coordination of these energy squiggly lines. And all "things," which are really the approximate groupings of scatter dot plots, or rather the neighborhood of squiggly dots that tend to sing more or less in harmony, form one consciousness. And the fullness of all squiggly energy dancing is God. We are extensions of God, like the pointy ends of sea urchin spines. We think we are so different and unique. We are. But if you realize our mass of energy squigglies are part of the whole, that they are just like a density of stars in the void of space, then you can begin to appreciate the vastness and connectedness with that holy holistic wholeness. (Yeah, I just wanted to pun.)
But there's squiggly energy everywhere. Yep. All matter has a consciousness, though there are many complexities. Actually, the energy itself is the consciousness; or rather, the harmonious coordination of the energy, the neighborhood song.
Minerals like rocks vibrate, and if you hit them you hear a sound. Plants have a consciousness; they turn towards the sun and demonstrate other low intelligence. Non-human animals have a more complex consciousness, and there is a great variety here. Mammals and especially primates tend to have the more complex consciousness on Earth, and of course humans the greatest consciousness on Earth. This is all a matter of complexity.
But this is not the end. It is a property of ongoing biological-spiritual evolution. Part of that evolution required acquiring abstract thought to propel us away from our common ape ancestry. But now we are prisoners of our abstract thought and need to take a great leap forward: to join a spiritual collective consciousness, we need to free our minds from abstract thought and free our minds from ego.
To put it another way, collective consciousness is the next step in human consciousness biological-spiritual evolution, but to get there it takes, not abandoning abstract thought and the ego, but freeing the mind from them. The is the great spiritual awakening that is and has been occurring and will save humanity from the imminent dangers before us: the planet's sixth mass extinction, global climate change, arms race, overpopulation, resource depletion, pollution, social injustice, and so forth. But I am encouraged when I see the backlash of nationalism and other small-segment power-grabs. This are death throes in the face of cultural change. We are not in a revolution. We are in a spiritual-green renaissance that may include some revolutions.
The collective consciousness is difficult to explain. It is like another dimension; the kingdom of heaven is within you. It is like a lucid dream. Imagine having a dream life so real that you couldn't tell which was "more real," your dream life or your waking life. Is your dream life just the place you go to escape reality every night, communing with everyone else like a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), or is the dream world the home world of our true selves, our spirits, and this material world is only the place where some of us descend to do work and earn treasure (energy) for heaven (the dream world)? We are in this material world, but not of it.
The world of the collective consciousness is heaven, but it is not the heaven we usually conceive of from church or scripture. Or, at least I didn't. This heaven is a multiverse is pure spiritual energy, and each universe is constructed, much like we would construct Minecraft worlds.
Now what the collective consciousness does is go planet to planet, like astral projection into the shells of biological bodies, raising the consciousness of the dominant species to eventually join the community of collective consciousness. I don't know for sure, I am nearly certain that primates are not the chosen animals on all planets. And many planets would of course have species we would not recognize.
They have been here, the ascended masters, or ancient aliens, or whatever your myth neatly defines them as. They have been here since the beginning guiding us along, quietly in the background so as to not disturb us. They have their own Star Trek-like Prime Directive of least interference. But now that our demise is imminent, it is time to acknowledge their presence and join them.
Eons from now, after we have experienced this material world what would seem like an infinite number of times and other types of material and non-material worlds we cannot possibly imagine, our consciousnesses will grow and expand in complexity, unfolding and achieving ever higher forms.
