I excelled in school, at least until around high school, when I got bored and eventually dropped out, several times, haha. (I was also dealing with a lot of other things).
I was am rather slow sometimes to pick up on concepts, and I find that incredibly frustrating. I also often need to understand something completely, inside and out, before it finally "clicks".
I laugh when I recall the time in Air Force* Basic Training when we were in the classroom handling M-16s for the first time. I kept asking all these questions, wanting to know how the weapon worked. The instructor eventually got fed up with me and barked something like, "Look, Airman, just aim and pull". LOL. What I really wanted was this:
But when things finally come together for me, the comprehension is usually both deep and wide, ifimaysaysomyself. Maybe that's why I was am a slow learner sometimes.
One of the things I struggled with was showing my work. When I understood something, I just understood it. The knowledge was just there before me. The teachers always wanted me to show the steps I walked through to get to the answer, to work through the problem, which exasperated me. What steps? There were no steps! Why waste needless effort? Here's the answer, isn't that good enough?
But I wasn't in charge. Them be the rules. And if you want to play the game (I didn't), you had to play by the rules (I didn't).
